Driver Backup – 5 Reasons Why You Need to Backup Up Your Device Drivers Now

If you have a computer, more than likely you have peripheral devices which you use everyday, such as printers, modems, and video cards.  It is the device driver which makes them work in conjunction with your computer, assisting in the exchange of information from the computer to the device itself.  As with any other file on the computer, driver backup is a vital part of keeping your systems running smoothly.  Here are five instances where backing up your drivers would prove useful.

When installing or reinstalling an operating system: Driver backup is required if you are upgrading your operating system to a newer version, or if you need to reinstall your system.  Installing or reinstalling an operating system could possibly wipe your computer clean of all its files, including your device drivers.  In order to keep using your devices after the operating system is installed, you will need to save the driver files separately and re-load them after re-installing your operating system.

When updating a device driver causes errors: If you decide to update a device driver to a newer version, it is a good idea to have a backup of your old driver software.  Sometimes when attempting to install a driver software update, the installation may cause the device to stop working properly.  By having a driver backup on hand to roll back to, you would be able to reinstall the last working version of the device driver and still be able to use the device, even if the update was unsuccessful.

Your device drivers become corrupt. There are a number of factors which could cause your pc device driver files to become corrupt.  Your computer could become infected with a virus, or a thunderstorm could cause a power surge to your computer.  When these files become corrupt, for whatever the reason, you will be unable to use the associated devices.  By keeping a driver backup, you will be able to replace the corrupt files with the original ones.

Your system crashes or becomes infected with a virus. Unfortunately, viruses and system crashes are an everyday occurrence in the computer world.  When these dreaded situations arise, any file, including device drivers, can become corrupted or even deleted.  Keeping a driver backup will ensure that once the problem is fixed, either by you or a professional, you will still be able to use your existing pc devices.

Your device driver is not available online. Many manufacturers of computer peripherals have a website which you can download the driver software in case you need it, but some do not.  If you are unable to find the software to your specific peripheral, it is important to perform your own driver backup on a separate disk, in case any unforeseen circumstances occur.
